A lesson at the Museum of Minerals

Class tours by appointment. Three routes through Hall 8 that follow the geography curriculum of grades 8–9 in Kazakhstan’s schools: the Mohs scale, the mineral wealth of Kazakhstan and the history of the Earth. A pupil’s phone recognises the exhibits, and right answers earn experience.

Along the geography curriculum

The learning objectives of the typical curriculum that a lesson in the hall helps to reach.

  • The Mohs scale in Hall 8Grade 8

    • 8.3.1.5 classifies rocks and minerals by various features
    • 8.3.1.7 determines the properties of rocks and minerals
  • The mineral wealth of KazakhstanGrade 9

    • 8.3.1.6 analyses the distribution of mineral resources in connection with how rocks and minerals form
    • 9.3.1.4 identifies the patterns in the distribution of Kazakhstan’s mineral resources
    • 9.3.1.5 shows on the map and describes the main centres where Kazakhstan’s mineral resources are mined and processed
    • 9.3.1.6 assesses Kazakhstan’s mineral resources
  • The history of the Earth in one lessonGrade 8

    • 8.3.1.8 explains the methods of dating rocks
    • 8.3.1.9 using the geological time scale and the geochronological table, singles out the major stages and events in the formation of the Earth’s crust and the development of life

The Mohs scale in Hall 8

Ten minerals that measure hardness: each one scratches the one before it. Pupils study specimens in the museum collection through photographs and descriptions.

Tasks

  1. Study minerals in the museum collection and compare their appearance and properties.
  2. Which of them would scratch glass? The hardness of glass is about 5.5.
  3. Put the minerals you found in order of hardness without looking at the list — then check yourself.
  4. Open the page of any of them on the site: what are the mineral’s formula and crystal system?

The mineral wealth of Kazakhstan

Exhibits of Hall 8 from Kazakhstan’s deposits, by region; the places are named as the museum’s labels name them. Beside them, the geological map: where these rocks come to the surface.
